Some musicals leave you emotionally shattered. Others leave you deep in thought, contemplating life’s biggest questions. Apparently, Mamma Mia! leaves you grinning from ear to ear, resisting the urge to dance in the aisles, and humming ABBA songs all the way home.
This beloved jukebox musical arrived at the Keller Auditorium this week, bringing with it all the sunshine, romance, and infectious energy that have made it a Broadway and movie favorite for more than two decades. Despite this, I was still one of the strange few people on earth that still haven’t seem Mamma Mia! and didn’t have a great grasp on the plot before going in. And honestly? That made it so fun, because I had no idea how many of the iconic songs I was about to instantly know!
Between the comfort of classic songs, the sheer talent of the cast, and the refreshing feel of a simple stage set, I couldn’t recommend seeing it more during this run! Sophie’s voice was clear as crystal and met the perfect tone of her character on the brink of girlhood and womanhood. Donna absolutely embodied the classic vibe of Meryl Streep in this role! The rasp? The power? The moves?? I was absolutely amazed with her performance of this iconic role.

Set on a picture perfect Greek island, the story follows Sophie, a young bride-to-be determined to discover the identity of her father before her wedding day. What follows is a delightfully chaotic reunion filled with old loves, lifelong friendships, and one iconic ABBA hit after another.
While the plot itself embraces a level of playful absurdity, that’s never really been the point of Mamma Mia!. The show’s greatest strength lies in its ability to create pure joy, and this touring production does exactly that. From the opening moments, the cast radiates enthusiasm, drawing the audience into a world where every emotional milestone can be perfectly expressed through an ABBA song.

Even for audience members who have never seen Mamma Mia! before, the music feels instantly familiar. Song after song prompted smiles of recognition throughout the theater, with classics like “Dancing Queen,” “Mamma Mia,” “Take a Chance on Me,” and “Super Trouper” receiving enthusiastic reactions from the crowd. One of the show’s most impressive accomplishments is how seamlessly these beloved songs are woven into the story, often feeling surprisingly natural despite their iconic status. You’d think the cast members were the original singers with how crystal clear their vocals were and how they completely embodied the performance.
At the heart of the production is the enduring friendship between Donna, Tanya, and Rosie. While the romantic entanglements provide plenty of laughs, it is the bond between these three women that gives the story its emotional foundation. Their chemistry brings warmth, humor, and authenticity to every scene they share, reminding audiences that Mamma Mia! is just as much a celebration of friendship as it is a romantic comedy.

Visually, the production captures the carefree atmosphere audiences expect from the show. Bright costumes, energetic choreography, and a lively ensemble keep the momentum moving from one musical number to the next. The Greek island setting serves as the perfect backdrop for a story that never takes itself too seriously and encourages audiences to do the same.
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Mamma Mia! is how welcoming it feels. Whether you’re a lifelong ABBA fan, someone seeing the musical for the first time, or simply looking for an entertaining night at the theater, there is something undeniably infectious about its spirit. In a world that often feels increasingly complicated, there is something refreshing about a show whose primary goal is simply to make people happy.
By the time the curtain call arrived and the cast launched into a high-energy finale, the audience was fully invested in the celebration. Smiles were everywhere, applause was immediate, and the joyful atmosphere that had filled the theater throughout the evening carried well beyond the final bow.
Mamma Mia! may not be the most profound musical to grace the Keller Auditorium stage, but it doesn’t need to be. Its charm lies in its ability to transport audiences somewhere sunnier, sillier, and infinitely more carefree for a few hours. Judging by the laughter, applause, and enthusiastic audience response throughout the evening, this production accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do.
And really, any night that ends with an entire theater wanting to dance to ABBA can’t be a bad one.
