Broadway in Portland is keeping things lively at the start of this season with Some Like It Hot, a fresh, tap-dancing reimagining of the beloved 1959 film. The show blended comedy, jazz-age sparkle, and heartfelt storytelling into a high-energy night at the Keller Auditorium. And guess what? We even have a local in the cast! Be sure to give Bryan Thomas Hunt from the West Hills area and extra cheer or two!
Set in Prohibition-era Chicago, the plot follows Joe and Jerry, two musicians who witness a mob hit and go on the run. Disguised as women, they join an all-female swing band heading west. What begins as a desperate escape quickly spirals into a whirlwind of disguises, romance, and self-discovery. The familiar farce of the film is still there, but the Broadway version adds new depth by exploring themes of identity and belonging.

The songs swing between brassy showstoppers and soulful ballads, capturing both the glitz of the 1930s and the emotional heart of the characters. And through it all, the cast keeps the pace sharp, balancing laugh-out-loud comedy with surprisingly tender moments. Leading performances bring charisma and chemistry, while the ensemble dazzles in high-energy tap and jazz routines that never lose steam.
With fast-footed dance numbers that bring the house down, the choreography shined. Sets glide from smoky Chicago speakeasies to sunny California resorts, while the costumes burst with sequins, fringe, and vintage flair. The production feels both classic and modern, grounding its spectacle with clever stagecraft and fluid pacing.

Some Like It Hot is more than a nostalgic nod to a Hollywood classic—it’s a joyful, full-throttle Broadway experience that celebrates comedy, music, and the freedom to be yourself. At Keller Auditorium, it’s as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the ears, leaving audiences laughing, clapping, and maybe even tapping their way out the door.
